Is Rose of Sharon a hibiscus?

Is Rose of Sharon a hibiscus?

Yes.

Hibiscus syriacus, a hibiscus.

It comes from Asia. It is the national flower of South Korea. (They call it the Korean Rose.)

It came to Europe by the 16th century. Settlers brought it to America.

Hibiscus leaves can be brewed into herbal tea. The small leaves have a citrus flavor, like Red Zinger tea. The flowers are edible. They have a nutty flavor. (My rabbits loved them.)

The hibiscus you see in Florida is most likely Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. Similar, but not the same.

Rose-of-sharon thrives in a colder climate than Florida hibiscus can tolerate.
